Stayed at Ellen Hall years ago and it was lovely then. More in the countryside than lakeside but the barn cottage was great - four poster bed, log burner and bath steam "room". They can arrange champagne/flowers etc and were decently priced. The smaller cottages, whilst still okay, were more run of the mill.

If you're looking for something different and more unique, try the Dovecot with leisure club membership included. Not stayed myself but it was listed as one of Independent's 20 romantic cottages for last Valentine's day.

Wherever you go, hope the sun shines on you!

Claire - I know a couple who chose a 5-star self-catering cottage in the Eden Valley, just to the east of the Lake District National Park. That was where the man in question chose to propose. They had a lovely one-week break in the cottage. The place is rustic with the stone walls and stone roof of a 17th century farm building but the interior is all modern and luxurious. Very nice patio to sit out and enjoy views which really are magnificent. And the proprietors will go out of their way to arrange that something extra you might want. Fancy a champagne hot-air balloon ride over Cumbrian countryside? They can arrange it. Want the best table for two beside Ullswater? They will book it for you.
